Now that the Formation controversy has wound down, I’d like to declutter my mind on this once hot topic. I was just in disbelief that this one performance sent some people running scared . If that’s what one Superbowl performance can do to some, then surely those people ought to be able to empathize (not sympathize) with the struggles Blacks have faced since we’ve been in America. Beyonce’s performance shed light on the issues of Black America. Nothing about that performance was racist. Maybe revolutionary, but not racists. Blacks have always had to conform to ALL White America. Everything that is ALL black was derived from America being ALL white. There are black activist for black rights because we never had and still do not have equal rights. So if you were in those numbers that denounced the Formation performance you may need to take a moment and truly assess the America we ALL live in.
I think the Superbowl 2016 Halftime Show exemplified a true representation of America. The Formation performance reminded us that America still has obstacles it needs to overcome, while the last performance showed us where we should be striving to go. Such a negative uproar was created about the Formation performance that the beauty of the last performance was overshadowed. As Bruno Mars, Cold Play and Beyonce sung the the words “we’re going to get it together somehow” with a group of multicultural guests accompanying them America missed the big picture. That “We are the World” moment in history. But what’s the point in the “We Are the World” moments when it’s just that- a moment. It feels good and right for the moment and then reality quickly sinks in.
Like the reality of the Trumptainment (Trump the Trump). During the time of the Super Bowl no one really thought that Trump would have made the headway that he’s made today. Those of us that oppose Trump held on to a little hope that maybe just maybe there wouldn’t be that many people, who call themselves American citizens, that would support Trump’s ideology. Wait … there is no Trump Ideology. He has no sensible answers. We thought, certainly we have come further than the hate this man is spewing! …Memo: Our President is Black!… Oh yeah, along with the Black President came the unveiling of those that have been in masquerade attire all of their lives just waiting for their “king” to take the throne to give them the courage to fully remove their masks and “Make America Great Again” like the old days he loved! Well now, why wouldn’t there be a need for African Americans to get in Formation after witnessing the masses of people in support of such hate? When species become endangered, vulnerable and threatened actions are taken to protect them. Therefore, Get In Formation implies that actions need to be put into place to protect us, for we are endangered species.
Just think…There would be no reason for anyone to get in Formation if America’s form was correct. But it’s all wrong!! From it’s form to its misinformation. That’s right, America “Slays” all day! From systemic slaying to African American slaying justification. She Slays. From school to prison pipeline to gentrification. She Slays. From unemployment to ghettoization. She slays. From racism to media misrepresentation. She Slays. From mass incarceration to discrimination. She Slays, She Slays, All day, All day, She Slays, She Slays , All day . . . SO PLEASE WAKE UP SO WE DON’T GET ELIMINATED!!
