Does Snoop have a valid point about the Roots 2016 series? I think he does to a certain extent. I totally agree with Snoop, that there needs to be more positive black shows that depict black success instead of the numerous Ratchality TV that consumes our youth and sensationalizes dysfunctional family drama. However, I think Snoop may have forgotten, due to the “roots” he’s smoking, that he has been a major contributor through his own music (Are Celebs Role Models By Default?) and movies to the very destruction that he’s so disgusted with in his twitter rant. And that’s about the extent that I can agree to.
Honestly, it was just last year when my family hosted our family reunion that a similar thought entered my mind. My family was hosting our family reunion and of course our parents and their generation wanted to visit the Civil Rights Museum again, while my generation was TIRED of visiting African American History Museums at EVERY SINGLE family reunion. We felt that we’ve heard it, learned and understood the struggle. If you’re black and attend the traditional family reunions, I know some of y’all have had the same thoughts…don’t judge me. But thanks to my father and other relatives, they reminded us that yes my generation may know the struggle but we must make sure that our children know our history. It was our very family members that were part of the struggle and put their lives on the line so that we can enjoy the freedoms we have today. T.I. couldn’t have explained it more clearly than he did on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show when he stated, “we can be lost in luxuries” and forget about the struggles our ancestors endured for those luxuries we celebrate today.
Needless to say, we put those reunion shirts on and walked through the museum explaining the struggle to our children in hopes that they will do the same for theirs. As we walked through, we passed by several other families in their family reunion shirts that I’m sure have had the same discussion. I’m sure they would all agree with our family reunion theme for that year “Keep Calm and Continue the Legacy!”
Snoop, I Agree Black is Real but how real would Black be without our history?
