Justice for Alton Sterling
Honestly, everything to be said has been said and continues to fall on deaf ears. Why continue to explain to those that can’t wrap their brains around the senseless murders of black lives that the senseless murders are just that, MURDERS. My question is for those citizens that support open carry laws and forget that the open carry law is not just for white Americans but all Americans. Louisiana is an open carry state. Citizens that are at least 17 years of age are allowed the right to carry a handgun without a permit. Therefore, the question that should be addressed is, what systems are in place for officers in open carry states to approach “alleged suspects” when the “alleged suspect” has the right to carry a gun? How can one justify the killing of an armed citizen that has the legal right to bear arms without utilizing proper techniques to assess situations reported by anonymous callers?
Yes, Alton Sterling may have been a convicted felon and didn’t have rights to carry; however, officers didn’t know who they were approaching. Even if the officers knew Alton Sterling was a convicted felon, it is the the duty of the officers to make a proper assessment before using aggressive police tactics. Particularly when officers approach the “alleged suspect” and his/her actions aren’t representative of the callers accusations at the moment. Not all, but too many officers use unilateral judgment instead of equilateral judgement in an already unilateral system.
“Even with videotaped evidence of police destroying black people, many freedom-loving Americans remain unconvinced of a systemic problem.” ~Jesse Williams
